The packet's conditional trade was simple: if capital-expenditure guidance rose, hold or add semiconductor exposure. That condition needed to be separated from the harder question of whether the spending company itself would convert higher investment into near-term earnings and cash flow.

What Actually Happened

Meta supplied the literal resolution. In its official Q2 2026 results, the company narrowed full-year capital-expenditure guidance to $130B-$145B from $125B-$145B, raising the lower end by $5B.

The operating result was strong at the top line but costly underneath. Revenue reached $60.80B, up 28% year over year, while Q2 capital expenditures including finance-lease principal payments reached $31.08B. Operating margin was 31%, and free cash flow was only $0.78B after elevated investment and other cost pressures.

Contemporary reporting also showed Microsoft increasing quarterly capital spending by roughly 70% to $41B, reinforcing the broader conclusion that large-platform AI investment had not entered a digestion phase (Axios).

Market Reaction

Meta released results after the July 29 close, so July 30 was the first full regular session able to price the report.

The closes are deterministic measurements from the local market-price store. They do not establish that Meta's report alone caused each move. Earnings, positioning, macro news, and company-specific factors were active across the cluster.

Thesis Impact

The event confirms the existing demand mechanism for NVDA and MU: hyperscaler capital spending remained high enough to support accelerator, HBM, and DRAM demand. It does not justify a thesis re-rating because the current theses already incorporate that mechanism, and the existing warning trigger requiring major spending cuts by two hyperscalers was not activated.

For META, the same evidence cuts both ways. Higher investment supports the long-run AI-capacity case, but the Q2 margin and free-cash-flow burden raises the proof threshold for monetization. The relevant next evidence is second-half operating-income and margin conversion, not the size of the spending plan by itself.

Trade Discipline

The packet's conditional premise was met, so existing semiconductor exposure can be held. Any addition should remain inside the existing risk budget rather than chase the first-session moves, especially after MU's unusually large reversal.

Do not translate higher Meta capital expenditure into an automatic bullish META trade. Increase exposure only if subsequent results show that AI investment is producing durable revenue, operating income, and margin conversion.
